The heart of Berwick Saint James

Welcome to The Boot Inn, a historic country pub steeped in centuries of heritage, character, and warm hospitality. Under the care of Shane and Lena since August 2026, we are proud to offer a true village haven where locals, walkers, and travellers come together to share good times, hearty food, and proper ales.

Generations of history

The Boot began as a private house in the 17th century and from then until 1909, was part of a private estate of nearly 11,000 acres. The first printed record of the Inn's name is a trade directory from 1848, with the landlord named as William Kyte.

Kyte was a master shoemaker by trade and it is believed his 'beer room' was a side line money maker in the front room of the house. Hence the decision to name the pub what it was.

Fast forward 2 centuries and 21 licensees later, The Boot Inn has since been taken over by Lena and Shane Rose.

A dream brought to life

Taking on The Boot Inn in August 2026 was the realisation of a shared dream for Shane and Lena. Coming from different professional backgrounds, they spent years waiting for the perfect pub to call home. When this historic venue became available, they seized the opportunity to transform it into a vibrant community hub. Open all day, every day, our mission is to create a welcoming space filled with lively conversation, togetherness, and genuine country spirit.

Warm fires, sunny gardens, and wagging tails

Stepping through our rustic timber doors means stepping into a timeless atmosphere. In the depths of winter, our roaring open fires keep everyone cosy and relaxed. Come the warmer months, our expansive beer garden offers generous space to unwind in the Wiltshire sunshine with friends and family. We are proudly dog-friendly throughout, so muddy boots and four-legged companions are always greeted with a warm smile.

Traditional country dining and local ales

At The Boot Inn, our kitchen stays true to authentic British pub traditions. We source as much fresh produce locally as possible, partnering closely with Wiltshire farmers and local gamekeepers to craft hearty seasonal specials alongside timeless favourites. Paired with our hand-picked selection of cask ales and fine wines, every meal is prepared with care to give you honest, comforting flavour in every bite.

"The door of The Boot will always be open to all, whether you are a regular, staying for a short while, or simply passing through."
